Skyscraper

Saltbox

This archive, currently consisting of over 820 digitized images of American architecture plus explanatory material, was originally constructed as a supplement to my course FA 267 From Saltbox to Skyscraper: Architecture in America. This class surveys the development of architecture in America from the 17th century to the present, with particular emphasis given to local architectural monuments.

The color images on this site are low resolution scans of my own slides and photographs in my collection. Utilizing the flexibility of hypermedia, the historical material and slides contained here can be can be accessed in a variety of ways, such as by date, style, purpose, and location. This flexible structure allows various approaches to the material.

This web site proved to be a very useful adjunct to my course, and with the assistance of a Boston College Teaching and Advising Grant, I have continued to develop these pages. A more complete description of the site and its functions can be found in a presentation which I gave at a recent conference on networked learning; the presentation can be viewed by clicking on this link. There is also a related Archive of European Architecture.

Although these images are freely available for viewing, they are intended for educational use. Please don't abuse them.
Please email any requests for usage of these images: howej@bc.edu. Thanks!
