Welcome! We hope that this page will prove useful as a guide to Albrecht Dürer's Large Passion series and J.S. Bach's St. Matthew's Passion, especially used in conjunction with a reading of Martin Luther's The Freedom of a Christian.
The layout of the page is designed to allow the reader to simultaneously view a woodcut from Dürer's Large Passion series and text and audio from a congruent area of Bach's St. Matthew Passion. Larger images of the Dürer woodcuts can be viewed by clicking on any of the thumbnails. Audio may be played with the embedded controls above near each picture. More information about technical issues, or feedback links, are available in the Page Information section.
The images are from the AMICO image library; the originals are held by the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. The audio clips and text (both German and translation) are taken from the Karl Richter recording of J.S. Bach's Matthäus-Passion.

A brief note about playing back the audio. It seems that our server is not working quite perfectly to serve up audio files. So, if you get an error message that a file cannot be found, simply dismiss the error message and click play again -- all these links have been tested and they work. Also, our server seems to take a while to connect before it will start playing back, sometimes 30 seconds or more, so please be patient.
As time goes on, this page may be further developed to include specific notes or commentary after some of the sections -- let us know if you think they would prove useful. If you would like more information, or would like to offer feedback on this page (we'd love to hear from you) please use one of the mailto links below.
