COURSE OBJECTIVE:
Using intedisciplinary materials (texts,
films, slides, music), this seminar will illustrate how certain cataclysmic events such as war and revolution, as well as innovative thinkers, will force society, especially American society, to perceive itself in a radically different manner. Out of the powerful chaotic social, economic, and political forces at the turn of the century, MODERNISM is born.
There are many readings, so plan ahead. At the close of the semester, you will be asked to account for the reading
of these texts.

RE: Integration of the Arts into the HP curriculum


When we met at the close of classes last semester, we agreed that we would try to integrate the Arts into our classes as much as we could. The grant that we had for the summer produced several good bibliographies as well as some solid themes for presentation in class. Above all, it paved the way to have several of the Fine Arts faculty lecture to our faculty and students when we are doing a specific unit that would be strongly complemented by an art lecture.


Would you and your students be interested in a lecture on Greek classical art from one of the more eminent classicists in New England, Prof. Cornelius Vermeule (Fine Arts/Museum of Fine Arts)? I spoke to him about his past lectures, and he seemed to be genuinely interested in an afternoon lecture, e.g. on Troy and the gods and heroes surrounding the war. He presented this before in a most scintillating illustruted lecture. Could you please let me know by Sept. 20 at the latest if this is something that you and your students could commit themselves? The slide lecture would be approximately one hour c.4:00 PM some afternoon in late September while you are still doing the Greek classics.


In the meantime, I am having Pat make copies of the materials provided by Profs. Vermeule and Berger to complement their lectures. If you would be in need of slides for a specific lecture, you would have to make an appointment with Andrea Frank, the slide librarian.

TO: Sophomore Honors Program Teachers

RE: Integration of the Arts into the HP curriculum



When the Honors Program teachers met in May to discuss the integration of the Arts into our curriculum, we suggested that we receive from the Fine Arts consulants a bibliography with a suggestion of some possible themes for discussion. With our grant, and the assistance of Fine Arts Profs. Cornelius Vermeuele, Jeffery Howe, and Pamela Berger, we have accomplished the above in a preliminary way. The next stage is to invite these professors or others in Fine Arts to offer a lecture that would gather the Sophomore teachers and students around a relevant topic, e.g. Renaissance Art or Romanticism.


Attendance at such slide presentations in the past has only been srong when the respective teachers agree to have their students participate as an integral part of the course. If we do organize a lecture this Fall, e.g. on 14th-17th century Art topics, would you be able to commmit yourself and your students to a one-hour lecture, c. 4 PM some Mon. through Thurs. in September, October, or early November?


If this is an appealing idea, a Sophomore teacher could help organize this with me and we could establish a date, time, place, and art historian for the event. Besides the academic advantage of this, it might be a good idea to bring the students and faculty together socially as has been occasionally done on a limited basis.


Please let me know by Sept. 25 if the idea of a slide presentation along with a Sophomore social might be something that you would like to be involved in this semester. I can be reached with a note in my HP mailbox or a phone call at 2-3895.
