Ajax-  Ruler of Ithaca, a Greek commander at Troy. Ajax is the tragic hero of Sophocles's play.  He becomes possessed and commits suicide with Hector's sword.

Athena-  Goddess of war and wisdom.

Odysseus- Ruler of Ithaca, a Greek commander at Troy. Odysseus is responsible for making peace between Agamemnon and Teucer at the end of the play.

Tecmessa- Ajax's captive bride.

Teucer-  Ajax's half-brother.

Menelaus- joint leader of the Greek forces at Troy, brother of Agamemnon. He and Teucer, along with Agamemnon, argue about the fate of Ajax's dead body.  At the end, convinced by Odysseus, he decides to allow a proper burial.

Agamemnon- overall leader of the Greek forces, brother of Menelaus. He and Teucer, along with Menelaus, argue about the fate of Ajax's dead body.  At the end of the play, convinced by Odysseus, he decides to allow a proper burial.
