Trojan Horse -A huge, hollow wooden horse that was built by the Greeks and used
to gain entrance into Troy
during the Trojan War. It was built by the master carpeter Epeius. The Greeks
pretended to desert the war, but instead sailed to a nearby island called Tenedos.
They left behind them Sinon, who persuaded the Trojans that the horse was an offering
to Athena, and that it would make Troy
impregnable. Although Laocoon and Cassandra
warned the Trojans, the horse was taken inside. Once night fell, the Greeks emerged
from it and opened the city's gates for the returning Greek army. The Aeneid
tells this story in detail while the Odyssey briefly touches upon it.
