Odysseus son and successor to Laertes, king of Ithaca, husband of Penelope and father of Telemachus.  In the Iliad he was chosen for the night expedition by Diomedes, and stops the massacre of the Greeks. He is an envoy to carry Agamemmnon’s offer to Achilles, and he wrestles Ajax the greater.  He is also the central figure of the Odyssey, which chronicles his ten year journey home to Ithaca after the end of the Trojan war.
