This is the 14th annual list of local seasonal events. A very full list of such activities is published each Thursday in the Calendar section of the BOSTON GLOBE. There you will find, for example, details about such popular events as THE NUTCRACKER, BLACK NATIVITY, performances of the MESSIAH, etc., which I cannot list here. All events occur in December, except two not listed below: the tree lightings at Faneuil Hall and at Filene’s in Downtown Crossing; the former is the Saturday before (Nov. 17) and the latter is the Friday after (Nov. 23) Thanksgiving, both in the late afternoon.
The Service of LESSONS AND CAROLS on Tues., Dec. 11th, at St. Mary's Chapel features scriptural readings in a variety of languages and the famous Boys' Choir of St. Paul's Church in Cambridge. Note also our own A DANCER'S CHRISTMAS, now in its 21st year and a popular Boston tradition.
Finally, my favorite events: the annual MESSIAH and the CANDLELIGHT CAROLS
at Trinity Church in Copley Square. Dates and times are listed below; both
are free. Early arrival is essential -- an hour before
the concert is strongly recommended for all of these events at Trinity
Church. Fortunately the CANDLELIGHT CAROLS (one performance on Saturday,
two on Sunday) takes place this year while you are still here taking exams;
most years students have already gone home, so take advantage of the unique
opportunity this year. These are splendid celebrations of music in
the setting of Trinity Church, one of the architectural splendors in America.
Only the Advent and Christmas sections of THE MESSIAH are done. This concert
will conclude at about 8:15; it begins at 6:30 with organ and orchestra
preludes. A collection is taken up during the concert. To get a decent
seat you should be there by 5:30.
