In Print: Contemporary Artists at the Vinalhaven Press: An
exhibition of some 61 prints dating from 1986 to the present, which
was organized by the Portland Museum of Art, and traveled exclusively
to the McMullen Museum of Art. It comprises works of art by Jose Bedia,
Grisha Bruskin, Mel Chin, Robert Cumming, Charles Hewitt, Robert Indiana,
Komar & Melamid, Alain Paiement, Alison Saar, and Peter Saul.
The Vinalhaven Press - a fine-art press and workshop - has been operating
on the island community of Vinalhaven, Maine since 1985. Each summer,
a few nationally or internationally known artists are invited to work
in the shop with a rotating roster of master printers.
The exhibition is concerned with the artistic process of printmaking:
how aesthetic choices are made, who is involved, and what these decisions
mean to individual prints, the character of the press, and the artist's
entire body of work, according to exhibition Curator Aprile Gallant.
The exhibition is accompanied by a 96 page illustrated catalogue.
