Possessing: Irish Landscapes 1750-1950

Possessing Image

Jack B. Yeats
Death for Only One, 1937 (detail) 24 x 36", oil on canvas
O'Malley Collection

This section presents the finest examples of Irish landscape painting from Irish national museums and American private collectors. Visitors learn how eighteenth-, nineteenth- and early twentieth-century Irish artists expressed a growing cultural nationalism and sense of the distinctness of the Irish landscape. The exhibition texts also explore the impact of English and Continental aesthetic movements on the Irish tradition of landscape painting.
