Lecture: "Legal Issues in Art Restitution: Historic looting, the Monuments men, and nazi looted art"
Leila Amineddoleh, J.D.

From Alexander the Great’s razing of Persepolis in ancient Persia to Napoleon’s large-scale pillaging across Europe to modern day art thefts, this lecture will address the complex issues—legal, ethical, political, and
otherwise—pertaining to art and cultural heritage during and after times of war. In particular, it will focus
on topics that have recently garnered great media attention: the Monuments Men, George Clooney’s film
based upon actual events related to a group of servicemen tasked with protecting art during the
Second World War and restituting works stolen by the Nazis, and the 2012 discovery of a treasure trove of
over 1400 looted artworks discovered in Germany, which was announced in November 2013. The lecture
will explore the legal battle for the return of the artworks currently being waged by the rightful owners
and the major obstacles they face.
