Lecture: The Problem with Parthian Art at Dura-Europos
By Lucinda Dirven, Associate Professor of Ancient History, University of Amsterdam.
FREE
Open to the public
ILA Institute for Liberal Arts 10 Stone Ave.

With his article "Dura and the Problem of Parthian art" (YCS, 1935), Michael Rostovtzeff firmly connected figurative monuments from Dura-Europos dated to the first three centuries of the Common Era to the art of the Parthian court. This lecture sets out to explain the longevity of Rostovtzeff's ideas about Parthian art and subsequently argues that it hampers a proper stylistic analysis of the Dura-monuments. Figurative monuments from Dura-Europos have nothing to do with Parthia, but are closely related to nearby Palmyra instead.

The time of the Dura-Europos excavations was a crossroads for conservation of art and archaeological materials as new synthetic materials and scientific methods began to replace more traditional materials and techniques.
