Internships

Program Overview

Since 1993, the McMullen Museum has offered internships to undergraduate and graduate students currently enrolled in classes at Boston College and graduate students enrolled in local Museum Studies programs. The program is geared to students interested in exploring the careers available in art museums. As a museum focused on mounting in-house exhibitions, the McMullen Museum familiarizes interns with not only the general inner workings of museums but also the detailed process of producing exhibitions. Interns work closely with Margaret Neeley, Publications and Exhibitions Administrator, and Diana Larsen, Exhibition and Collections Manager/Designer, in various aspects of exhibition planning.

Projects are given to interns based on their individual skills and interests:
Undergraduates gain an array of experience from performing background research for upcoming exhibitions, building image databases using Excel and PowerPoint, and proofreading per the Chicago Manual of Style to marketing exhibitions and assembling press kits.

Graduate students will gain professional experience performing curatorial research, writing didactic labels and grants, and copyediting exhibition catalogue essays.

The McMullen Museum seeks applicants with a positive attitude who are eager to learn. Applicants must work efficiently and demonstrate excellent research skills, attention to detail, strong organizational and administrative skills, and the ability to problem-solve.

Internship Opportunities

Given the diverse nature of the exhibition production process, the Museum encourages students not only of art history but also of other disciplines to apply. Interns volunteer a minimum of three hours per week (Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.) for the duration of the internship. Interns working during the summer volunteer a minimum of eight weeks but have the option to choose a start and end date. If a University holiday coincides with an intern’s scheduled day to work, the intern is not required to reschedule.

All internships are unpaid. Students may request credit from their academic department.
