Drawn by the artist about the time of his marriage to Margaret Mason Perry, this work bears La Farge’s seal, embodying his surname in Japanese characters, designed by Rizio Awoki and cut in ivory for him when he was in Japan in 1886. The drawing was probably by stamped by the artists’s son, Bancel, who was a studio assistant to his father. La Farge occupied rooms in the famous Tenth Street Studio Building in New York where Frederic Church, Albert Bierstadt, Sanford Gifford, and Winslow Homer also worked. |
