Timme Angsten Regatta Midwest Fall Championsip November 29-December 1, 2002 REGATTA HIGHLIGHTS: Chicago Yacht Club hosted the 56th running of the "unofficial fall championship of college sailing" in Belmont Harbor in 420's. On Friday, 8A and 6B races were sailed in South winds 4-8 mph with occasional puffs in Belmont Harbor with a high temperature of 50. On Saturday, behind an overnight cold front, winds were NNW 15-22 with gusts up to 30 and temperatures in the low 30's and falling to the mid-20's. On Saturday 5A and 7B races were sailed. Numerous capsizes and damaged equipment caused some delays. "Old Timers" were reminiscing and enjoying the return of "traditional" Timmes sailing conditions. Frozen sheets, ice coated life jackets and dry suits were the order of the day. The most spectacular capsize had the lead boat of 4 round the leeward mark then stall; the remaining three were in a puff, the inside rounded up hard and capsized onto the stalled one, the outside one dove to leeward and death rolled onto the stalled one, and the middle one went straight in and pitch-poled onto the stalled one, which also went over as a result of it all. There were occasional snow flurries with cloudy skies, except for a two hour sunny period in the early afternoon. Sunday was cloudy with temperatures in the mid-20's and winds Southwest 7. There were 2A and 2B races sailed on Sunday to complete the rotation. After Friday's races, Wisconsin led with Boston College 10 points behind. After Saturday's races, on the strength of Boston College's B Skipper Frank Ustach, Boston College had the lead by 11 points, which grew to 14 points by the conclusion of the regatta. Ustach won the B Division title There was a tight duel between Boston College's A Skipper, Chicago Yacht Club's Mark Teborek, and Wisconsin's A Skipper, John Porter, with Teborek taking the division by just four points. Courses sailed were W-L-W-L, W-L-W-L-W, Double Triangle-W/L, and Double Triangle-W-L-W-L. There were four protests and one breakdown application. In Race 5B, Minnesota protested Boston College and Michigan State plus Boston College protested Washington, all parts of one incident; Boston College and Michigan State were DSQ for violating Rule 10. In Race 7B, Kansas protested Michigan State, however the protest was ruled invalid due to the protestor having failed to hail "protest." In Race 9A, Minnesota sought redress but did not meet requirements for it being granted; redress was denied. In Race 10A, Wisconsin protested U-MD/Balt.County; U-MD/Balt.County was DSQ for violating Rule 19.1, Wisconsin was awarded average score. The Regatta Chair was Suzy Phelps. The Scoring Chair was Janet Baxter. The Dock Chair was Bill Fox, Jr. The PROs were Karen McLane and Andy Keiner. Race Committee members included Mike Esposito, Ann Moorman, Dick Schweers, John Thomas, Andy Kiener, Jr., John Kiener, and Mary Murphy. The Chief Judge was Ted Jones, and the Jury included Allan Teske, Dennis Bartley, Don Glasell, George Griswold, John Antanaitis, Gene McCarthy, Cindy Muller, Alice Martin, Robert Sargent, Nancy Glover, Jay Muller and Clare Wegert. American Airlines provided transportation for PCIYRA's Cal-Berkeley and NWICSA's Western Washington teams. Housing with Chicago Yacht Club member families was provided to all competitors. Traditional hot lunches, hot soup, Saturday night banquet and dance, and Sunday Awards Luncheon helped all survive the trying conditions. Queens was a no-show. Kansas was assessed the ICSA 20-point per division penalty for failing to sign their Record of Participation Form. Kansas left the regatta after Saturday. The Timme Angsten Memorial Bowl was awarded to Boston College, the champion of the regatta. The MCSA Graduate Officer's Trophy was awarded to Wisconsin, the highest placing MCSA team, the winner of the MCSA Fall Dinghy Championship.--Gail Turluck A division = 15 Races B division = 15 Races A B TOT 1.
