Lawrence A. White Trophy for the NEISA Sloop Championship NYYC and Brown University October 19-20, 2002 8:00 PM 10-20-02 REGATTA HIGHLIGHTS: Saturday - All racing was cancelled due to gusty SW winds and damage to sails. When the 12 Sonars left the dock winds were SW 15-18 knots. The race committee anchored just northwest of the Newport Bridge in an attempt to race in the more sheltered shore off Jamestown. By the time they anchored gusts were in the mid 20's with steep chop from the outgoing tide. Five mainsails had leech damage while one jib lost its batten. All boats took their mains down for the long beat back to Newport Harbor. All sails have been repaired and racing will begin early on Sunday with a 9:15 AM first start scheduled. The top two teams will qualify for the ICSA Sloop North American Championship, November 1-3 in Newport. Sunday - First race was started promptly at 9:15 AM. 11 races were sailed in west/northwest winds 8-18 knots on W2 courses. Very shifty and puffy conditions. URI and Brown pulled ahead of the field early and stayed in front. Nine protests were reported but none were filed. Three 20% penalties were taken. Special thanks to the NYYC and their entire team for a job well done. Brown and URI will represent NEISA at the Sloop Nationals in two weeks.
