fall into running season

Make the most out of the runner's favorite season

ADD A DAY OF RUNNING - To your current schedule as long as you still have two off days. An off day can be a non impact day on the bike, elliptical or in the pool. There should be at least one full day off from exercise.

ADD 5 MINUTES TO YOUR RUNS - This will burn more fat and increase endurance preparing you for longer runs.

ADD A RACE INTO YOUR ROUTINE - Either bi-weekly or on a monthly basis, races can increase fitness, boost metabolism and decrease your running time.

stay flexible

Perform the following stretch to keep range of motion in the hips

The Spiderman stretch - can be performed stationary by alternating legs. Or you can be progressive and lunge forward with alternating legs keeping your hands in contact with the floor.

pre - marathon training

Right around this time of year people start thinking about training for the grand daddy of them all, the Boston Marathon. Beginner runners should heed warnings of not increasing mileage too fast this time of year. For a beginner, someone who has never run a marathon, you shouldn't go over an eight mile long run prior to January 1st. Too many students have injured themsleves before even getting to the starting line. There is plenty of time for long runs, don't start now.

Non impact aerobics and recreation - Are highly recommended as a supplement to an individual's training program. Try a water aerobics class or aqua jogging in our swimming pool.
