ScubA Diving
BC Campus Recreation and United Divers Inc. of Somerville, MA, have teamed up to provide scuba classes for the Boston College community. At the end of this course, participants will be eligible for SDI scuba diving certification.
To register for this class or for more information, please contact Member Services at campusrec@bc.edu. or call 617-552-0797.
You do not need to be an expert swimmer to participate in this course. However, you must be confident in the water, able to swim 200 yards, and tread water for ten minutes. United Divers will provide all necessary equipment during the pool training sessions, but divers will need to buy or rent their own masks, snorkels, fins and boots for the open water dives. Participants must have a valid Boston College ID to participate.
NOTE: We are currently in the process of scheduling a scuba class for the spring semester. More detailed information will be available by February 15, 2012.

The Open Water Certification Course is a two-part process. First, we will cover the why and how of scuba diving in our classroom and pool sessions April 7, 16 and 17 at the Flynn Recreation Complex pool. The second part will consist of four open water dives with United Divers Inc. The open dives are included in the price of the course, but you may also choose to get a referral and complete the dives elsewhere.
Skills: In multiple pool and open water sessions, you will practice scuba skills with United Divers’ exclusive Comfort Through Repetition teaching method. Some of the skills you will learn include:
- Moving in the water with ease
- Breathing normally under water
- Controlling buoyancy so you neither descend nor ascend
- The easiest ways to enter and exit the water
- Getting water out of your mask or mask clearing
Equipment: Since you can't dive without equipment, there is extensive information on scuba equipment including:
- Selecting the best diving equipment for your needs and budget
- Maintaining and adjusting your equipment to extend its life and improve performance.
Members: $425
Non-Members: $450
This fee includes the four open water dives needed to receive your SDI certification card. These dives will take place within driving distance of Boston College and transportation can be provided. These final open water dives will take place over the course of one weekend, with diving done on both days. Instructor will set dates for dives in accordance with student schedules.
