BC HIGHLIGHTS
  • Boston College earned its first bowl victory since 2007 with a 36-30 victory over Maryland Monday afternoon in the 2016 Quick Lane Bowl at Ford Field in Detroit.
  • The Eagles tied a school record with eight sacks in the game by six different defenders, including sophomore defensive end Zach Allen, who recorded a career-high two, and junior defensive end Harold Landry, who increased his BC single-season record to 16.5 sacks. His 21 career sacks rank third in BC history..
  • Graduate quarterback Patrick Towles recorded 151 passing yards on a 10-for-22 day with two touchdowns and an interception. Towles recorded a 20-yard receiving touchdown on a trick play from sophomore wide receiver Jeff Smith. He connected with sophomore tight end Tommy Sweeney for a two-yard touchdown and a 49-yard TD to sophomore wide receiver Michael Walker to increase his season total to 12.
  • Sophomore running back Jon Hilliman tallied his sixth touchdown of the season to open the game's scoring with a one-yard touchdown in the first quarter. He is tied for 11th in BC history with 21 career rushing touchdowns.
  • Senior defensive back John Johnson recorded a career-high 12 tackles, including 11 solo stops in his final game in a BC uniform.

KEY MOMENTS
With the Eagles leading by six and just under two minutes to play in the game, the BC defense forced Maryland to turn it over on downs, giving the Eagles the ball back and sealing the win.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Eagles were the first to get on the board, as Hilliman tallied a one-yard rushing touchdown with 6:47 to play in the first quarter. Hilliman rushed six times for 37 yards on the nine-play, 49-yard scoring drive. Junior Mike Knoll's extra-point attempt was blocked to make it a 6-0 BC lead.
  • BC made it a 13-0 early in the second quarter with a two-yard touchdown pass from Towles to Sweeney. Hilliman set up the scoring play again with five rushes for 17 yards and on fourth-and-one, Towles converted the quarterback sneak to keep the drive alive.
  • Knoll hit a 22-yard field goal after a Maryland turnover to increase the BC lead to 16 with 10:32 to play in the second quarter. Senior defensive end Kevin Kavalec sacked Maryland quarterback Perry Hills and knocked the ball out of his hands, which senior defensive tackle Truman Gutapfel picked up, to give the Eagles the ball back at the 10-yard line.
  • The Terps got on the board with a 62-yard run by Ty Johnson with 7:29 to go in the quarter, but the Eagles came right back to make it 23-7. Senior running back Myles Willis started the drive with a 31-yard run and on third-and-four, Towles rushed for eight to pick up the first down.  On a reverse, Towles tossed it to Walker, who flipped it to Smith, who hit the QB in the end zone for a 20-yard score.
  • Teldrick Morgan returned the ensuing kickoff 55 yards to immediately put the Terps in BC territory. On the third play of the drive, Johnson broke free for a 30-yard rushing TD. The score stood at 23-13 with a failed two-point conversion.
  • BC added one more score before the end of the half, as Towles hit junior wide receiver Charlie Callinan for 21 yards and then Walker for a 49-yard touchdown pass with 35 seconds to play in the second quarter. It didn't take long for the Eagles to add to their lead. The offense couldn't convert on its first try of the second half, but Knoll punted it 54 yards and senior defensive back John Johnson was there for a tackle for a loss of five yards. On the next play, junior defensive tackle Noa Merritt forced his first career fumble, which Kavalec picked up in the end zone for a BC touchdown.
  • The Terrapins answered with back-to-back touchdown passes of 63 yards and 52 yards to make it 36-27 game with just over 10 minutes to play in the third quarter.
  • The defense came out with huge stops to allow just a Maryland field goal in the fourth quarter. On first-and-goal at the two-yard line, two holding calls and a sack backed the Terps up to the 27-yard line on third down. A face mask penalty on Boston College gave the Terrapins a first down. The Terps threw two incomplete passes before getting a first down at the one-yard line. On second-and-goal, senior linebacker Matt Milano recovered a fumbled snap to give the Eagles the ball with four minutes to play. After the Eagles fumbled at the five-yard line, Maryland threw three incomplete passes, forcing a 23-yard field goal.
  • After BC went three-and-out, Knoll punted to the 35-yard line. The defense forced three more incomplete passes before Milano and Landry sacked Hills to close out the bowl victory.
