BC Alumni San Diego Chapter Summer Newsletter

Thank you to everyone who took the BC Alumni SD Chapter survey we sent out in May! It looks like many of you did not know we exist, so WELCOME! We are quite an active chapter and we welcome you all to join us this upcoming year. Our events bring together people of all ages. We rarely have an event with only one age group, so we hope you give us a chance.

Here are a few of the surprising statistics that came back:

90% want to hear chapter news via email
30% said they were "very interested" in cultural events
55% had not attended an event in the past year

Annual Report

The San Diego chapter of the Boston College Alumni Association is thriving! To summarize the past year, we created this Annual Report.* It contains highlights of our events and engagement opportunities from the past year and gives updates on chapter news, and alumni activity in the area.

Dinner with Eight Strangers: Young Alumni Mentoring

Let's strengthen our professional networks by trying something new! Are you an alum over the age of 35 who would host eight other alumni for dinner in an effort to support young alumni. The idea is for four alumni over 35 and four alumni under 35 to come together to break bread and hopefully forge lasting partnerships.

Depending on interest, the goal will be to match eight professionals in similar or tangential fields. Please email Lissa Tsu ’00 at if a) you are an alum over 35 who would host eight for dinner; b) you are an alum over 35 who would like to attend to potentially mentor young alumni, but cannot host at this time; c) you are an alum under the age of 35 who would like to attend. Please include the field of work you are in.

How did you choose Boston College?

I decided to attend Boston College at the suggestion of a friend and undergraduate admissions associate director Paul Mathers. I had worked summers with Paul as an admission counselor teaching assistant at Phillips Academy and was able to visit the campus many times. Fortunately, I was able to get the inside scoop from Paul on the amazing opportunities at Boston College.

What is your favorite memory from when you were at school?

I have many great memories as a graduate student but one in particular stands out. The support of students and faculty and staff was really important to me—academically and outside of the classroom. I had attended Colorado College which was tiny compared to BC so I was worried that I would get lost. As an amateur artist and student at BC, I curated a solo exhibit at a local furniture store and I remember the turnout was successful because everyone from the Sociology Dept. attended and also supported me with purchasing some artwork. This support was very instrumental to why I am still a working artist.

Why and when did you move out to San Diego?

In 2001, I moved out to San Diego to open up numerous galleries in La Jolla, Newport Beach, Las Vegas, Laguna Beach, and Los Angeles. I was a young art dealer making my mark in the West Coast and fell in love with the climate (no hard feelings to Boston snow!).

How do you think the BC Alumni SD Chapter can engage more alumni?

I have found that small private dinners have proven to be most enjoyable among our wonderful alumni. We have a strong alumni group but sometimes that equates to busy schedules. If more alumni opened our homes I feel that we would create an extended family that went beyond the “My Name is” social networking events.

What is something you leaned at BC that you have carried with you?

At Boston College I learned discipline and confidence in my approach to success.
