A Story Behind Every Plate

I received the plate "TRP EGL" in December 2001, when my daughter was applying to BC. When she was accepted, I ordered "BC 2006" for her. Coincidently, my daughter’s freshman-year roommate also had "BC 2006" as her New York vanity plate. My wife then asked, “What about me?” I found out that "BC 71" was available and ordered it for her.

Since I graduated in 2002, "CCGBC" has been my car's official name.

When I was accepted to Boston College in 1999, my father, Stephen Marley '72, MBA'80, ordered me a BC vanity plate to congratulate me. Though it has yet to get me out of any speeding tickets, I do receive occasional honks and waves from my 2003 classmates. Go BC!

I received my BC plate back in 1987 or 1988. At the time, BC was becoming more well-known in California, especially after Doug Flutie’s heroics. I’ve always been close to BC and I thought it would be good to get some exposure for the school. I know one person who has the plate "4 BOSTON" and another who has "BOSTCOL."
Some people have a hard time understanding what the plate means. A person once asked, "Did you used to be overweight? Your plate reads, 'Ever to extra large.'" Now, I’m sure a lot of people know what the plate means. My BC experience meant a lot to me and I still have quite a few friends in Boston and other parts of the country.
In fact, my buddy James "Rocco" Centorino '71, MS'75, and I played our trumpets at the BC vs. North Carolina State football game on September 8, which can be viewed on YouTube.

It's a tribute to my alma mater, Boston College, and to my graduate school (as well as my current employer): Ohio State University. Go Eagles! Go Bucks! (Always in that order.)

North Carolina has vanity plates with UNC, NC State, Duke, Clemson, and other ACC schools. One also sees a lot of Virginia Tech plates down here. A few years ago, I thought it was time to put BC on a plate.

There's an interesting story behind this plate, which I've now owned for a couple of years. I got it from John Wissler '57, MBA'72, the former longtime executive director of the Alumni Association, who had it for many years. Originally, it belonged to Eddie Miller '57, MBA'68, D.Ed.'90, who worked in the BC Athletics office. Eddie had the opportunity to get another plate, so he offered it to John, and, in turn, John offered it to me when he recently relocated to New Hampshire. John and I have been best friends since we were freshmen in 1953.

The license plate "BC-83" came from my desire to announce proudly to the world that I was a BC grad. Interestingly, "BC 83" was already taken in New Hampshire so I had to add the hyphen where the space would have been. I had "BC-83" as my plate for 21 years. My plate presently reads "EVR2EXL" to highlight the BC motto.
