Boston College announced today the recipient of the 2005 Chief Executive Scholarship at a meeting of the Chief Executives' Club of Boston. Awarded to Souzana N. Obretenova '08, this year's Chief Executive Scholarship is named in honor of Chief Executives' Club speaker and longtime leader in the financial services industry, Dominic D'Alessandro. D'Alessandro joined University President William P. Leahy, S.J., in congratulating Obretenova.
D'Alessandro has been president and CEO of the Canadian insurance company Manulife Financial since 1994. In 2004, he managed the largest cross-border transaction in Canadian history with the successful completion of the merger with Boston-based John Hancock Financial Services. Named Canada's Most Respected CEO in 2004, D'Alessandro is credited with making Manulife the largest insurance company in Canada and one of the most profitable in the world.
Patrick T. Stokes, Anheuser-Busch president and CEO, established the Chief Executives' Club Speakers Forum Scholarship Fund at Boston College in 2003 to honor outstanding corporate leaders like D'Alessandro, and to provide full funding for four years to talented BC students on their way to becoming future leaders. In 2003, Marlon A. Dee '07 received the first scholarship, named the Jeffrey R. Immelt General Electric Scholarship in honor of the chairman of the board and CEO of the General Electric Company. Stokes is a member of the Boston College class of 1964, a parent of three BC graduates, and the Chairman of the University Board of Trustees. He has also been the recipient of the Boston College Alumni Association's Award of Excellence in Commerce.
A member of the class of 2008 at BC's Carroll School of Management, Obretenova hails from Edmonds, Washington. She is pursuing a double major in finance and psychology and made the Dean's List during her first semester at Boston College. Obretenova is among the select group of 50 first-year students chosen for the Emerging Leaders Program (ELP) at BC. She is also active in BC's chapter of Students in Free Enterprise (SIFE) and the BC Investment Club. Based on her experiences at BC so far, she hopes to ultimately pursue a career in capital markets or investment banking.
