Externship Program

We invite Boston College alumni in Massachusetts and New York City to participate in our Externship Program, which was successfully inaugurated last year. An externship is a one–to five–day job-shadowing and mentoring experience. It is an opportunity for students to gain an understanding of a business, industry, company, organization, and/or job function. It is their chance to ask questions and to observe day-to-day business operations.

The intent of our Externship Program is threefold: mentorship, career education, and alumni and student connection. We believe that an externship will provide a great opportunity for our alumni and students to engage in exercises that will forge mutually rewarding relationships. For alumni, hosting an extern will provide an opportunity to connect with current Boston College students by assisting them in inquiries regarding your industry, job function, and even overall career path. Alumni will serve as mentors, guiding student growth through their unique perspective as Boston College graduates. For students, the insight, information, and practical understanding that they receive from being exposed to the structure, processes, ideas, and idiosyncrasy inherent in any complex organization are invaluable. Because many alumni are representatives of organizations and small businesses, potential interns and talent could never be closer and more accessible.

The Externship Program is not for academic credit and students are not expected to be compensated for their participation. Rather, it is an experience that exposes students and alumni to one another and allows increased networking, branding, career education, mentorship, and recruitment to occur. The enclosed link provides further details about the program and its intent. Please remember that the Externship Program is only open to employers in Massachusetts and New York City. The sponsor application is available on the link below and the externship period will occur between January 5 and January 13, 2009. We hope you will consider becoming a Boston College Career Center partner in this program.

Conversation with Candi Carter, Communication '91
By Christina Lepri (condensed with permission)

On Tuesday, June 10, a group of Eagles sat down to dinner in the West Loop of Chicago. Nine BC students, recent graduates and alumni host Sara McCarthy had the opportunity to meet and talk with Emmy award winning TV producer and BC alum Candi Carter. The group met at Flat Top Grille, a popular Chicago area chain, just across the street from Harpo Studios where Ms. Carter has worked as an executive producer for twelve years. The group was a collection of different schools, majors, and years with the common desire to talk with and seek advice from a successful BC grad.

After dinner, the BC students were treated to a talk with Ms. Carter in one of the greenrooms at Harpo Studios. Ms. Carter talked about her experience working on several TV stations in different cities before settling at the Oprah show.

Ms. Carter encouraged the students to try as many internships as possible, and to use them to focus on a career that appeals to the student. One repeated phrase of Ms. Carter's certainly reflected a Jesuit background; her "get it and then give back" attitude. She stressed how we all have the social responsibility to take what we have learned from our education and our careers and use that to give back to our communities.
