Student finds niche after internship

By C.J. Wood '10

(Continued) - His job was to make sales productions for the Super Bowl and the NBA finals which would be shown to folks that wanted to advertise during them. He would write scripts, pick out video clips from the sports archives, and have Mike Lynch, the station's sports director (and father to Kelly '05, Molly '08 and Katey '10) do the voice over. "Everyone there was really nice, very friendly and really helpful to me," said Wobst.

Wobst got his foot in the door at Communications Career Night, a student/employer networking event that puts BC Communication alumni in touch with potential interns and possibly future employees. Wobst was able to make contacts at Channel 5 who called him over the summer and offered him the internship.

Wobst's favorite projects while working at Channel 5 were the few times that he got to go on commercial shoots for spots that the sales team produced specifically for air on the station. He got to be in an advertisement for the Sleep Apnea Center and Toys for Tots. "Some of my friends have seen those," he laughed.

Wobst maintains that the internship really helped him figure out what he wanted to do in the communication field. "The internship pointed me into what I'm doing now, trying to get into broadcast and production."

Taking an internship and running with it

By Caitlin Toland '09

Twenty years ago, Reebok emerged onto the athletic scene by encouraging and assisting women to become involved in step aerobics programs. This past summer, Kial Blumenkopf '09, helped Reebok reclaim its reputation as the women's fitness expert.

As an intern for the sports and entertainment Marketing department, Blumenkopf worked three days a week to promote Reebok's new image. The Beijing Olympics, in addition to Wimbledon, made for an especially busy summer.

Blumenkopf's responsibilities included organizing product packages to send to clients, planning and preparing for sponsorship events that featured celebrities such as Justin Timberlake and Kate Hudson, brainstorming new fitness programs that would appeal to women, communicating with entertainment marketing director Darcy McQuiggan's clients when she was out of the office, and making sure events and photo shoots were set to go smoothly.

Blumenkopf sent product packages to clients competing in the Wimbledon tennis tournament, such as Nicole Vaidisova and Maria Sharapova, as well as swimsuits to the USA women's volleyball team to wear during the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

Throughout her senior year, Blumenkopf has continued to work part-time with Reebok, especially to assist with special events. "I've most enjoyed seeing my contributions come to fruition in the past few months," she said. "Just a few weeks ago, Reebok launched its new fitness program for women—JUKARI ‘Fit to Fly.' Reebok partnered with Cirque du Soleil to create a new entertaining fitness program that includes a mix of cardio, strength training, balancing, and core training on a contraption called the "FlySet."

Blumenkopf had no trouble adjusting to her first taste of the real world. "Everyone, including the CEO was more than willing to help me if needed," she said. As a result of the internship program expanding over the years, Reebok instituted a weekly internship series speaker that gives interns an opportunity to hear from people from all departments and positions. "It was inspiring to hear stories of people who started out working in the mail room and are now holding top positions in the company."

Prior to her internship at Reebok, Kial was interested in pursuing a career in advertising or public relations. Her experience as a marketing intern has sparked a desire to continue in the marketing field, which she feels encompasses both advertising and PR. "Although I would ideally like to work in another sports or entertainment division, I am not limiting myself to any specific field," she said. As Commencement draws near, Blumenkopf is currently looking into commercial real estate and construction marketing, among other options.

"My communication classes at BC provided a great foundation in fields such as advertising, marketing, and PR," Blumenkopf said. "My experiences at Reebok provided an opportunity to take my classroom knowledge and put it to practical use in a field in which I am passionate. Working in an environment as warm and welcoming as Reebok made it easy to get up and go to work everyday."
