Igniting Campaign success

connell family makes investment in student experience

For Margot Connell, Boston College has been a “way of life” for more than four decades.

Beginning with her marriage to the late Bill Connell, a graduate of the Class of 1959, and continuing through the education that each of her six children received at the Heights, Mrs. Connell has a deep appreciation for how important it is to nurture Boston College and to invest in its future. And while her family’s gifts to BC have supported a variety of important initiatives, Mrs. Connell describes her passion as “anything that touches the student experience,” because “it is the students that make Boston College the place that it is today.”

It is this instinct that led Margot Connell to pledge $25 million to Light the World: The 150th Anniversary Campaign for Boston College in support of the planned construction of a new recreational athletics and wellness center.

Light the World sets new standards for Boston College,” she said. “The University has a bold vision of what it not only can be but will be in the future, and I am among the many alumni, parents, and friends who support that vision.”

The Connell family’s pledge came during Light the World’s quiet phase and was instrumental to the University’s ability to set a Campaign goal of $1.5 billion. Thus far, the Campaign has generated more than 80,000 gifts and pledges and those contributions have brought Light the World to the $570 million mark, as of April 30.

The name Connell has become synonymous with commitment to Boston College. William F. Connell ’59, who died in 2001, was a member of the Board of Trustees for 24 years, including a term as chair, from 1981 to 1984. The Connell School of Nursing was named in his honor in 2003. Today, Mrs. Connell is chair of Connell Limited Partnership and the family’s support of Light the World continues their long tradition of service to BC.

“Margot’s commitment to Boston College is extraordinary,” said President William P. Leahy, S.J. “She cares deeply about this University, especially its students. Margot also understands the importance of leadership and example. This magnificent investment in our campaign reflects her family’s desire to enhance Boston College and the student experience. With this gift, Margot and her family will help make one of BC’s most important strategic goals a reality and will inspire others to make Boston College a priority in their lives.”

“Students want and need this new recreation facility, and my children and I immediately felt that we should help to make it happen,” said Mrs. Connell. “I see everyday how important exercise and wellness is to my children and grandchildren, and I am glad that I can play a part in creating a center that will benefit many generations of BC students.”
