Teamwork.  Persistence. Resilience. For John F. Walsh '65, the lessons advanced by Boston College faculty went above and beyond core subject matter.

"Some of the values that I learned at BC helped shape my life and contributed to the success I had in business," says Walsh, who retired in 2001 as president of Schick-Wilkinson Sword, then the world's largest manufacturer of wet-shave products. The child of a high-school administrator, Walsh always valued learning and knows what it means to receive an education thanks to the generosity of others.

A former Eagles running back, Walsh came to BC on a full scholarship after attending public schools in Quincy, Massachusetts. Now, he is doing his part to nurture the next generation of student-athletes. A longtime annual supporter of the Flynn Fund, Walsh has also endowed a football scholarship with his wife Sara, and their three teenage daughters. The John F. Walsh '65 Family Football Scholarship Fund supports one player each academic year.

"As a family, and for me personally, giving back some of what I've been able to achieve over the years is very important," says Walsh, who attributes his philanthropic spirit to his BC education and the Unversity's continued dedication to the Jesuit tradition of civic involvement.

The Walsh family is building on this tradition by generously supporting Boston College. He encourages other alumni to do the same. "I think everybody should give back what they can," John says. "Boston College played an important role in my life. I feel blessed to be able to contribute to its success."
