Why I joined the Senior Class Gift committee

"I feel incredibly lucky to attend Boston College. I could not ask for better professors, mentors, and friends. I joined the Senior Class Gift Committee to honor those who made my experience here one that I will never forget. I hope that through my efforts (and the efforts of my fellow classmates), future students will have the opportunity to have a similar experience here at BC."

What is the Senior Class Gift?Senior Class Gift Participation

The Senior Class Gift is a student-led campaign to raise money for Boston College. This longstanding tradition unites seniors to give back to BC in support of undergraduate education. Gifts help provide financial aid to current and future students, fund student activities, support faculty, and improve life on the Heights. This is not just a senior event. It's a commitment that begins a lifetime of involvement with BC—the first step in the transition from student to alumnus/a.

Did you know...?

  • At BC—7 out of 10 students receive financial aid in some form, making their BC education possible.
  • BC's endowed resources cover only 11% of BC's financial aid budget; the remainder is funded by BC's operationg budget and annual gifts to the BC Fund. Notre Dame funds 67% of their financial aid packages by their endowment.
  • Our endowment-per-student figure is significantly lower than that of our peers. (Brown and Duke both have more than twice as much per student; Dartmouth has four times as much per student in its endowment.) This means the income per student generated by BC's endowment is significantly less than that generated by peer schools.
  • The Boston College funds raised $20.5 million from 29,963 donors in 2007.

Why does BC need my money? Don't we have a big endowment? Haven't I paid enough in tuition?

The University is funded by three major sources: tuition, endowment, and alumni giving. Endowment is the body of invested funds that produce annual income for a broad spectrum of purposes: support for student financial aid, distinguished faculty, outstanding academic programs, and faculty and student research. Endowment provides critical financial stability, ensuring a source of financial support year after year. Almost half of the endowment is already spoken for (i.e. can't be used for everyday expenses), and the University doesn't actually like raising tuition in order to make BC a better place. Gifts from alumni make the difference!

Doesn't BC make enough money from football and basketball?

While these two sports have been very successful for the University and do generate revenue, BC's Jesuit-based commitment to a robust, comprehensive athletics program (with 29 other sports) means that the Athletics Department requires a University subsidy of approximately $9 million annually.

Why does my gift matter?

Last year, BC raised over $1.4 million from gifts under $100.  With a yield of five percent, it would take nearly $30 million in endowment to generate that much interest in one year.

Why should I give?

Don't see what you're looking for? E-mail seniorgift@bc.edu to find out if you can designate your gift to that activity or program.

What will my money be used for?

If a gift isn't directed to one of the areas listed in the "Gift Designation" section, then your money will be used to fund student activities, provide financial aid, or support faculty.

Can I do this later?

Yes, but there is never any time better than the present. If you give now, we'll stop asking you for a gift this year. All gifts that count toward the Senior Class Gift campaign must be received by May 31.

Think about this:
Last year, money from gifts ≤ $100 totaled $1,473,095!

That money might have been used to...

  • Deliver e-mail to the university's 24,000 mailboxes for one month: $50,000
  • Program, organize, and run a Kairos Retreat, serving roughly 45 students: $10,000
  • Operate the Rec Plex for five weeknights: $8,000
  • Transport 5 PULSE students to their service placements in Boston throughout the year: $1,000
  • Buy 5 packages of microcentrifuge tubes for the Biology Department: $50
