"I've learned at BC that it's crucial to take the problems you see in society, and from an ethical standpoint, try to address them in your own way." - Kuong Ly '08

The cost of higher education is a roadblock for many families, and many students are forced to select a university based not on best fit, but on best financial aid. To address this issue, Boston College has made significant investments in our need-blind admissions policy; we admit students without regard to income, and once admitted, students are offered 100 percent of demonstrated need. For many academically deserving students, this turns the promise of a BC education into a reality.

With that reality comes a hefty price tag: this year BC awarded nearly $70 million in aid to our students. Since over 70 percent of our undergraduates receive some type of financial aid, gifts to the BC Fund are essential to keeping the doors of Boston College open to all students who deserve to be here–a proud BC tradition.

To ensure access for all students, especially those who cannot afford full tuition, many of the country's top universities have recently made aggressive investments in their financial aid programs. Princeton, for example, now exempts a student's home when calculating need, and gives full grants for freshmen and sophomores, leaving work-study to upperclassmen. For Princeton, that's easy: they have a total endowment of over $13 billion. Compare that to BC: $1.4 billion.

Endowment per student

Today, BC competes directly with schools such as Notre Dame, Brown, and Duke for the nation's brightest students. But when it comes to financial aid resources, we're forced to do more with less. Our endowed resources cover only 11 percent of our financial aid expenses, and our student-to-endowment ratio is significantly lower than those of our peers.

Gifts to the BC Fund help close the gap and bring academically deserving students to the Heights, moving us closer to what our peers can offer students with need.
