This summer discover the penetrating talent of the National Book Award winning
writer, Flannery O’Connor. Newton College Alumnae Chair in Western Culture and
Newton College Book Club moderator, Professor Judith Wilt, has proposed reading
four required selections from The Complete Stories of Flannery O’Connor, and recommended four additional short stories from this volume if you are up to a powerful dose of twentieth century fiction. Refer to the required short story reading list and the recommended short story reading list below.

Furthermore, add The Life You Save May Be Your Own by Paul Elie to your summer reading list. Elie reviewed four American Catholic authors for his book and detailed how their lives and their writings interacted with their faith and their art.

Winner of the 1999 National Book Award for Fiction and the 2000 PEN/Faulkner Award for Fiction, Waiting: A Novel written by Ha Jin captures the dilemma of a married Chinese military doctor in love with an unmarried nurse in Communist China in the 1960’s.  "Waiting" 18 years for a sanctioned government divorce is the novel's focus and compelling story.

In This Republic of Suffering: Death and the American Civil War, Harvard University president and renowned social historian, Drew Gilpin Faust, skillfully details the American struggle to comprehend the meaning and practicalities of death in the face of the unprecedented carnage and unspeakable loss of the Civil War. Faust’s powerful and thoroughly researched account examines how the Civil War generation coped with the reality and social impact of the war. The author chronicles the enormous death toll’s affect on the material, political, intellectual, and spiritual aspects of the country.

Sonnets of Shakespeare

Enjoy an evening of some of the finest poetry in the world when Rattigan Professor of English Emeritus John L. Mahoney recites Shakespeare’s sonnets. Professor Mahoney will read a selection of lyrical sonnets from his newly released compact disc.  BC Professor Mahoney has spent his lifetime teaching and writing about the power of poetry and now he brings Shakespeare’s most personal and treasured words to life.  Join us for this special event.

Before the hectic pace of the Christmas season arrives, set time aside for God in prayer.  This year, the BCAA will hold its annual Advent Day of Recollection at the Jesuit Campion Renewal Center in Weston, MA.  Beginning at 9:00 a.m. and concluding at 3:00 p.m. with Mass, Rev. Rev. William B. Neenan, SJ, will serve as guest moderator to discuss Do You Believe? by teacher and filmmaker, Antonio Monda.  Monda, a practicing Catholic, interviewed 18 renowned figures from the arts for this captivating book.  The author asked his subjects intimate questions about their personal belief in God and the result is a collection of conversations that is thoughtful, provocative and relevant.  Father Neenan is Vice President and Special Assistant to the President of Boston College.  He has published his “Dean’s List” of recommended books since 1982 and Do You Believe? is a silver anniversary entry which Father calls a “rewarding read.”

Winner of the 2005 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction, Gilead, by Marilynne Robinson, reveals the human condition.  This intimate tale is narrated by the unforgettable voice of elderly Congregationalist minister, John Ames, who unleashes the history of his family and faith by writing down his reflections for the benefit of his young son.  Spanning three generations, from the Civil War to the twentieth century, the novel depicts fathers and sons and the spiritual battles that can rage between them.
