The Memoirs of a Survivor by Doris Lessing and The Yellow Wall-Paper by Charlotte Perkins Gilman (short story can be downloaded at en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Yellow_Wallpaper)
To prepare for the May meeting, read a novel written by a feminist icon and a Nobel-Prize winner and follow it with a short story often regarded as an important early work of 19th century American feminist literature, and see what the two selections have in common. Doris Lessing’s The Memoirs of a Survivor is the author’s attempt at autobiography. Set in a beleaguered city, Lessing combines her visionary and realistic style of writing to create a place where government has collapsed and violence is pervasive. Told in the first-person perspective in the form of journal entries, The Yellow Wall-Paper by Charlotte Perkins Gilman illustrates the effect of confinement on the narrator’s mental health, and her decent into madness.
Professor Judith Wilt, Newton College Alumnae Chair in Western Culture, is the Book Club moderator.
