Christopher "Kip" '68 and Maureen Doran '69, co-recipients
Christopher "Kip" M. Doran is a psychiatrist in private practice in Denver. As an undergraduate at Boston College, Kip majored in Chemistry. After receiving his master's from Cornell University, he went on to earn his MD from Yale University's School of Medicine and completed his residency at the University of Colorado, where he was the chief resident at University Hospital. He has served in multiple professional positions, including president of the medical staff at two Denver hospitals, national health consultant to three federal agencies, and associate clinical professor in the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Colorado. Kip is a Distinguished Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association and the author of four books that have won international acclaim. At BC, Kip, was the marshal of the Cross and Crown Honor Society at his graduation, and he has continued to serve the University in multiple ways for many years, including as president of the Colorado Chapter of the Alumni Association and as a member of the National Alumni Board of Trustees, where he also served as national president. And in the world of Colorado sports, Kip is a certified referee for high school soccer and basketball.
Maureen O'Keefe Doran, an alumna of the Connell School of Nursing, also continued her education at Yale University. She went on to become a health nurse clinical specialist and is now an associate clinical professor in the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Colorado and also a federal nursing consultant. Her professional career has been marked with clinical and teaching honors: the Excellence in Nursing Award from the Secretary of the Veterans' Administration, the Outstanding Nurse Clinician in the State of Colorado, and the Outstanding Faculty Award from the Department of Medical Student Education at the University of Colorado Medical School. She has served on the boards of numerous civic and professional organizations, and in 2000, she became the third woman ever to serve as chair of the board of directors of the Association of Yale Alumni. She is the recipient of the Yale Medal in recognition of her service.
Together, in 2009, Kip and Maureen began a two-year stint as Peace Corps volunteers, working to combat AIDS and help its victims in Botswana, Africa, a country with the second highest HIV/AIDS rate in the world. The Dorans are the parents of two BC alumni: Alison '00 and Meghan '03.
