"When I first started looking for colleges and universities, Boston College was not even on my list of possible schools. But one day BC came to my high school for a college fair, and after talking to a very friendly and helpful admissions officer, I decided to go ahead and give BC a chance. I had never been to Boston before, so when I found out I had been accepted I convinced my parents to let me visit BC and the city to see if it was a good match for me. During my one week in Boston, I found it very hard to point out any negatives with one exception: the weather, which was much colder than anything I had felt in Guatemala! I absolutely loved BC's campus and could really see myself there. All the students I saw seemed happy and energetic. They all were talking and laughing, and the tour guide herself was very friendly outgoing. As for Boston, I was able to get around on my own and see many parts of the city, and the fact that I was able to do it without any difficulty on the T (subway) or by walking really encouraged me. By the time I was flying back to Guatemala City, I was already planning how I would tell my parents that I had loved BC.
I was excited but nervous when I arrived back in Boston in September for Orientation, and a little uncomfortable that the university was so big since I had come from a graduating class of 27 students. I soon saw that size wouldn't be an issue because most everyone I met was very friendly. The upperclassmen helped me find classrooms, let me see what their dorms were like, and little by little I felt I was becoming a part of BC. I made an incredible group of friends that continue to be amazing, and yet I still meet new people all the time and am constantly making new friendships. And to top it all off, I have had many opportunities to work with the community. I have started to work with the Special Olympics program, something we don't have at home, and it has been a great experience helping the athletes train. Plus, I had the chance to jump into the icy Atlantic Ocean in the middle of February to raise money for the program (I might not do this again, I'm still thinking about it)! Whenever I leave BC to go back home, it always takes a little while to adjust being away from my new friends and the college life!"
