A commitment to undergraduate education is central to Boston College’s motto “Ever to Excel.” Beginning with your freshman orientation, members of the BC community assist with your transition to academic and residential life. A variety of programs, such as freshman seminars and weekend experiences, will help you consider your academic and extracurricular possibilities.

Advising

All faculty members teach college courses and work to foster students’ intellectual development both inside and outside the classroom. The student-faculty ratio of 14 to 1, and median class size of 21, encourages more personal interactions between our professors and students.  Each semester, students meet their assigned faculty advisor who serves as a resource in planning a course of study.  Furthermore, the faculty advisor can provide assistance in exploring opportunities for research, international study, and internships.

Research

Many undergraduates participate in research projects alongside faculty members and graduate students, and may be assisted by the Undergraduate Research Fellowship Program, which awards grants to students participating in faculty scholarship. Additionally, some 50 students who have developed proposals with faculty mentors receive Advanced Study Grants for summer projects each year.

Orientation

All freshmen participate in one of seven summer orientation sessions. You will spend three days and two nights on campus during orientation, living in freshman residences, eating in dining halls, and getting to know other members of your class. You will also meet with an academic advisor to discuss your academic interests and register for fall semester courses.
